Pastoral Care


Pastoral Care of our pupils is at the very heart of all that we do here at New Oscott Primary School.  We treat each and every child as a unique and special individual and do all in our power to bring each one to their fullest potential and to ensure their emotional well-being. 

Our children are encouraged to make the most of their time at school, so every effort is made to remove obstacles to successful learning and to equip young people with the confidence and skills to be effective learners and effective members of the community.

We are particularly proud of our Nurture groups we provide.  Nurture groups are small, structured teaching groups for pupils showing signs of behavioural, social or emotional difficulties. These take place during the school day and organised by members of the Pastoral Team.

As a team we considered what makes the Pastoral Curriculum unique at New Oscott.

Key Aims

To make children the heart of the jigsaw scheme of work. Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world. To create tolerant and kind learners who can work reciprocallyrespectfully and cooperatively with appreciation of others’ views and beliefs.


PSHE Curriculum

Jigsaw teaches children to become aware of their thoughts and feelings throughout the programme, relating this to the PSHE subject matter being studied.

Jigsaw consists of six Puzzles (half-term units of work) containing six lessons. Each Piece has two Learning Intentions. One is based on specific PSHE learning (covering the non-statutory national framework for PSHE Education but enhanced to address children’s needs today); and the other is based on emotional literacy and social skills .These enhancements mean that Jigsaw is relevant to children living in today’s world as it helps them understand and be equipped to cope with modern issues such as body image, cyber and homophobic bullying, and internet safety.

Jigsaw raises self-awareness, group awareness, collaboration skills, teamwork experience, respectfulness, etc., preparing children for the wider world and their position in it.

The Right Room and The Rainbow Room

Many children have the opportunity to access the comfortable social space that the Rainbow Room in KS1 and the Right Room KS2 have to offer.


These rooms provide a wide variety of activities and resources, that are enjoyed by many our children during the school day.

Peer Pals

Our bespoke Peer Pal (Peer Mediation) program trains pupils in conflict resolution and offers valuable life skills to help sort out problems during playtimes. Our children take these roles very seriously. The Peer Pal program is designed for pupils in Y5 moving into Year 6 and pupils in year 2. Children follow a formal application process and are interviewed by members of the Pastoral Team. Mediators are timetabled during playtimes to resolve disputes independently using careful language and questioning. Peer Pals in Key Stage 1 can be distinguished by their colourful hats and in Key Stage 2 by their purple hoodies.

What can Peer Mediators do?

They can mediate if…

-  You are feeling left out

-  There is name calling

-  Friends have fallen out

-  You feel something is not fair in a game

-  When you feel unhappy

They will help you to...

-  Stop arguing about something

-  Find a way to agree and to make things better.

The Mediators Promise

-  They will not take sides.

-  They will not tell the pupil what to do.

-  They will not gossip about the conversation.
   (If they are worried about the session they will tell an adult)

The Mediators Rules

The mediators ask the pupils:

-  To talk one at a time and not to interrupt each other

-  To speak from their own point of view and not blame or accuse the other pupil.


PSHE and Citizenship

Personal, Social and Health Education

At our school we aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through class & school councils, fundraising events, supporting nominated charities and involvement in community activities. Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE & C, SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) lessons and assemblies to develop confidence, self-motivation, British Values and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.

We teach PSHE & C in a variety of ways: as a discrete subject, through SEAL lessons, via assemblies and through other subjects such as RE, History, Geography, English, Maths and Science, as well as through outdoor educational visits, community work and activities.

Relationship and Sex Education

Our school employs the services of Rebecca Jennings of ‘Raise Education’ who comes into school every year to teach a series of lessons on Health, Relationships and Sex Education to years 5 and 6. These are a very important part of a child’s education, dealing with such topics as puberty, personal development and drug education as they mature and progress to secondary school. Rebecca has many years’ experience in this field and handles the discussions and activities with care and sensitivity. All parents will be invited to an information session beforehand.
